Tierra Santa ("Holy Land")

A Catholic theme park in Buenos Aires featuring nightly resurrections of an 18-meter Jesus accompanied by a recorded hallelujah chorus. Also featuring a Creation laser show.

Channel One

I have landed a contract position writing the theme music and some audio bumpers for a news show recently acquired by NBC Universal. It's called Channel One, and will be aired in public schools every morning starting after Labor Day.

Floralis Generica

In the blueblooded neighborhood of Recoleta, this delicate colossus blooms daily at dawn and closes at dusk, a red light glowing within it throughout the night. She resides at the center of a reflecting pool.

The design was a gift from an art student who was grateful for his free education at one of the universities here.

Heaterless Gimnasio

Now I'm off to the gimnasio (gym, pronounced him-NAZ-ee-oh), which costs ~US$14.30/month and is worth every penny for its rustic, Rocky-in-the-Russian-shed-before-the-fight-against-Dolph-Lundgren charm. For the masculine invigoration of knowing I don't need a heater in this wintry warehouse because the Brazilian treadmill and I — we make our own heat. With the rusty freeweights, I create a ferocious burning. The primitive, mechanical stair machine — the one that does not use electricity and cannot be adjusted and whose resistance is lopsided — growls to me, "We can bend your dreams with our lopsided heat that is heat nonetheless!" Oh yess.

Bienvenidos al gimnasio 'Heaterless'.

'Why is he still writing,' you smirk, 'and not going to the gym?'

Because it's cold in there and I would sooner pretend about it than actually go.

This has nothing to do with Argentina and everything to do with the sunny car rides of my past.

Pansy!

It's a reflex, OK?
Animal instinct.

Another Way of Doing Things

Let's say you're an Argentine working on a construction site and you're cold. What do you do?

Despite being surrounded by dry wood, you start a fire to warm yourself.

And when you're warm enough and have no need of the fire anymore, what do you do then?

You leave.

Hipodromo Argentino

On my way to meet friends at the park, I got sidetracked by this hippodrome in my neighborhood. Saw some nice buildings with a horse track behind and just wandered right in. Ended up staying for hours. Place gradually filled with sharply dressed old men studying pamphlets filled with odds calculations. Horses raced every hour or half hour amid much swearing en Castellano.

It will be lovely come springtime.
